Skinning the vertical stab

Post by kennyw »

I'm all ready to rivet the skin onto the VS. But, I can't seem to find anyone to buck rivets with me. Theres only about 6 or so rivets just on the first side that I'm scare of ***ing up.

Anyone have any tips/tricks for solo skinning the VS?

If you can't find someone to buck them with, give it a try solo. If they start to look like crap, stop and put the part aside and move onto something else. Get back to it later.

Find an experienced builder in your area to help you through the hard parts.

So, my neighbor came over and helped me buck some rivets tonight. We spent about an hour practicing on some scrap and then tackled the vertical stab.

We got the forward spar rivets and center rib done on the first side. And almost finished the other side before it got too late. It looks to me like I might be over dimpling. But, I thought I'd post this picture and see what the pros here think:

Looks good to me!

As for solo riveting, if you don't have one of the Flush Swivel Rivets sets, I recommend picking one up from Avery http://www.averytools.com/prodinfo.asp?number=1047. They're great for solo riveting. I've used mine extensively.

Cheers,
Peter
