How to remove black writing and glue from Vans stickers...
Hi All,
Started my HS today, and I had a little trouble removing both the sticky residue left from Van's part number stickers and the black writing on the long HS spar strengtheners (HS608 I think). The self etching primer I'm using just requres a cleaning with a light detergent, but that method doesn't clean the above mentioned debris.
Any help would be appreciated....
Thanks,

Grant,
Go to your local auto supply shop. Purchase a gallon of the cheapest lacquer thinner that you can buy. Use this stuff for mundane or difficult cleaning jobs. It will melt/dissolve just about anything it touches. It is good for cleaning off grease or oil before shooting your etch primer also.
Cheers, Pete

Do you mean the black writing from ALCOA on the aluminum spar stiffeners?
They should be polished up fairly smooth to a satin-ish finish. To do that, get one of these babies:

It is the greatest thing since sliced bread for smoothing rough surfaces FAST!

I used Goo Gone for the stickers - worked pretty well. Windex or any window cleaner does OK, too. The really difficult ones were the ones on the hinge brackets - the stickers on the AL ribs, etc came off pretty easily.
I bought some of those flat scotchbrite wheels from Grainger (check local phone book for local store) and they're also available from mcmaster.com

Grant, that is an angle die gringer with a 3M Roloc attachment. The Scotchbrite pads are, of course... consumable.
...and that photo was taken before I radiused the corners of the stiffeners.
