Wingtip Lighting on sheared wingtips

Post by mustang »

I just got finished with the Creative Lighting system on my RV-8. I have some photos that I hope Spike will glue onto the bottom of this note. The LED boards have the center cutout which allows the landing light to beam through. I have off-set the strobe lights slightly from centerline to allow the landing light beam to be unobstructed. The strobes require 3/4 inch of clearance from the lense covers. I may have to remove the base gasket on the strobes to achieve this clearance.

I also intend to install a shiny stainless steel sheet on the panel under the strobe to provide for reflection. I hope to aquire some thin stainless sheet this week.

I did not feel like installing plate-nuts for the lense attach fasteners so I cut up some light crowsfoot weave glass and cut up some 1/8 inch epoxy circuitboard into small squares and positioned these squares over the glass/epoxy layup where the 6-32 machine screws would penetrate the wingtip. I drilled the holes and tapped the tip glass and epoxy circuitboard to 6-32. Seems to work OK.

After the wiring is complete and painting is done I will run a small bead of sealant around the perimeter of the lense to seal out rainwater and smooth the airflow.
Cheers, Pete

Pete, there is a thread on how to do that in the Support Forum. It is stickied near the top of the list.

Those are beauties!! I have a link saved in my RV file on my computer at home for these lights, and I plan to use them when I get that point.

Very nice!

Thanx Dustin. Good to see you and stick around!! :)

Pete, relax buddy. :) The reason that it did not work is that you were using the URL of the page that the photos came from. However, when you want to post a picture you have to use the URL of the picture itself. You can find that by typically right clicking on it and looking at the properties. The website you are using mangles those too a bit so I had to unmangle them for you. If you upload stuff to our gallery that mangling wont happen. Anyway, I believe that these were the photos you were trying to show? If I missed any that you want up let me know. Let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

I really like the look of these lights.

Are your wings painted red fading into white? That looks really cool!

Very nicely done I must say.

Snap,
No, I just painted the area around the light where the glass was primed and sanded. The rest will get painted after I finish moving. I wanted to finish up the lighting and lenses before I packed the tips for moving. The wings and tail are in the truck and trailer as I speak. I'm taking my first load up to Kamloops in the morning. Oh...I see now. I was looking at them the wrong way.

Nice paint job. I like the colour (correct spelling :P ).

I flew in a helicopter with the same colour as that. Had stripes down the side (rescue type). Was a real deepish cherry red. Then they refurb'd the machines and they came back a lighter shade of red. Didn't look right after that.

I think I might get the colour code off you if I can.

Snap,
There is no color code for this red. I am using Nason Urethane, which is an "Experimental" branded paint by Dupont. (Read cheaper)

I wanted the redest red I could get, so I told the guy that was mixing to put only pure red pigment in the mix. So, he took the amount of binder that would normally be used in any coded urethane paint mix and added the pure red pigment to make up to 100% and thats what came out. It is very close to Dodge Viper Red

Originally, we were going to paint our RV-8 with the red, white, and blue Miss America colors as in the poster from Van's (Minus the Stars). However, the wives and daughters all got together and changed out the blue top color to red and swapped the red from the bottom to the top. So red will be our dominant color now and the blue will hide the oil and dirt on the bottom of the fuselage. I was lucky enough to keep the white stripe on the sides. There seems to be some agreement that our nose art will be a stylized Canada Goose from the late Canadian Airlines. I like this RWB color scheme pattern because it effectively breaks up the shape of that fat, Hershey Bar wing which so dominates the aircraft.

Tell me, these lights:

http://www.killacycle.com/Lights.htm

The killacycle ones... do they make them and Creativair just resells them???

I might just buy the killacycle kit and add the landing lights from creativair to them!

A few bux here and there,, I suppose?

John,
I did notice that Killacycle was branded onto the LED circuit board, so I think your guess is correct.
