Aileron pushrod length?

Post by Joe Casey »

I am ready to cut the aileron pushrods, but cannot find a measurement to cut the rod .. there is a length on dwg 15 for Heim center to center (27 1/8 inch), but after much study, I cannot find the length for the rod alone... am I missing something?

I made marks on my work bench 27 1/8" apart. Then I screwed the two end pieces together and laid them on the drawing to get the distance between the threaded rod end and the HEIM F3414M to match the drawing, since it is to scale. Then I laid the eye of the HEIM F3414M on the marks on the work bench. Then I measured the distance between the collars of the threaded rod ends to get the length of the rod.

Hope this helps!

I recall only the overall measurement, so did as Smitty by laying the bearings along a rule the given total length and then measuring the distance between the collars. Did I say measure 3 times, cut once?

I did the same thing as Smitty and Carl - except I made sure the rod end bearings were screwed halfway onto the threaded stud for maximum adjustment. There was ample thread left beyond the "indicator hole" in case I needed to make it much longer. Anyway, the part assembly matched the drawings exactly. It turned out that I had to cut the tube exactly in half (no waste). Anybody else have stock they cut off? If so - I better go back and check!!

Dont forget about the jam nut when assembling!

I had a 2 inch piece left over after cutting the aileron rods. I'm sure that Van's just has a long "hunk-o-rod" and just hacks off some of it to send to us. I'm attaching the aileron rods to the ailersons this afternoon. I guess I'll find out then whether I did it right or not.
