alignment of root rib & trim spar

Post by Joe Parish »

Last night I riveted the root and tip ribs on the left elevator and then the bottom of the trim spar to the skin and I noticed when I finished the riveting that the trim spar and root rib do not line up very well. This is on the bottom of the left elevator between the end of the root rib and the trim spar. Wondering if this is a issue. The bottom picture it is laying against the top of the table

Joe,

Not an issue, but a good lesson. Sure it may not look great when you finish building the elevator, but you will soon forget it when the next screwup happens! You need to make sure that all parts fit tightly together before riveting. You could of easily fixed this by rebending the rear spar (or trim spar??) with some hand seamers.

What you have now is perfectly airworthy, and with a little filler, never noticeable! The important thing is the elevator is twist free.

Joe,
You might still be able to improve this with your hand seamers, even though it's all riveted together. I have some pictures and a discussion of how I worked on the trailing edge of my HS here:

Maybe this will help you.

Just went out and looked at mine, and it has a similar hump. You can sort of see it in this picture.

Fix it if you want, but I wouldn't think twice about moving on.

Thansk for the input guys! I was freaking a little bit when I noticed it but the more I thought about it the more I realized it probably was not a big deal. I was mainly thinking about the drag aspect of it more than the appearance. I am moving on and will come back and try to work it with the hand seamer as Bruce suggested. Great to have a place to get feed back! Thanks again
