Trim Tab & hinge issues

Post by Joe Parish »

I drilled my hinge to the elevator and trim tab. I put a piece of angle across the elevator trailing edge and the trim tab trailing edge. The trim tab is even with the elevator trailing edge for the first five inches and then it slowly drops, by the other end of the trim tab (inside edge) there is a gap of @ 3/32 to 1/8 inch I only have it clecoed together. Do not know if it is a issue or not any thoughts? I have edge distance issue on the hinge. I have tree holes that are between .024 -.033 to close . There are four other hole that are .004 - .009 thousandths to close. I am using twice the hole diameter from the center of the hole as my edge distance rule. Easy enough to order a new hinge but thought I would get some input? A few pictures to possibly help explain.

I am not sure I would worry about either. You didnt get your trim tab perfectly twist free but sometimes its incredibly difficult to do that. That wouldn't bother me so much.

As for the edge distance, you are a bit off, but then from what I can see it looks like the distance that you are off in is not in the direction that I *think* the part is loaded in. I wouldn't think much of keeping on trucking.

The MIN 2X hole distance to edge is for universal head rivet AN 470 and the
Edge Distance for Counter Sunk rivets AN 426 is MIN 2 1/2 times the diameter. It is always good to go more edge distance than minimums if you can.

You an always order a new hing or go with what you have done it will be fine.

Good Luck

Ordered a new hinge. Problem solved. I have never heard of a different edge distance for 470 versus 426. The slight twist in the trim tab will stay for now. Thanks for the input.
