Fiberglass Tips - Elevators - Little too long

Post by Jimzap »

Hello everyone, I was test fitting my elevator tips today, and they appear to be about 1/4" too long. Is this normal. See pic below. I placed the front part of the tip into the counterweight skin and this is what sticks out of the aft end.

Yes, I do have one more rivet to set in the CW rib.

Completely normal. Mine were almost a 1/4" too long as well. Sand them to match, then you may have to reconnect the ends if they split.

You can see my initial trim line in this picture-

Fiberglass elevator tip - too long

Post by Jimzap »

Chad, what if I just left them long and trimmed the flange to fit into the end of the elevator?
I would avoid having to fiberglass the joint when it split. How did you reconnect the ends when they split?

Is that an option?

I had the same problem on the RV10 wing tips except they were off much more than 1/4 inch. When I trimmed the ends off they did not split. I have not finished the ends yet but I am thinking I would need some glass on the inside to reincorce is and sanding down the outside to reduce the thickness so it mathes the flap thickness.

Trimming

I had to split one wingtip because I couldn't get it to align. I just glued the joint back together with flox and then added a bit of flox and a layer of tape in the inside.

I wish I had reinforced the inside of the joint on the other tip as both tips need trimmed in length and the reinforcement will be more difficult now that the alum rib is in place.

Would work just fine. I used flox to reconnect.
