Official guidance for drilling holes in wing spar center section

Post by Brantel »

Van's finally published written directions on the guidance around drilling extra holes in the main wing spar center section of the RV-7/-7A & -9/-9A....

Good for me since I am thinking of installing a smoke system....

Thanks for this. I am at the point that I am thinking about how to run what will likely be a river of wires and am completely paranoid about drilling holes in the main spar... obviously I'll wait to see just how many 'extra' wires I have, and what size hole might be required, but this is helpful. Does anyone run wiring along the side of the fuse past the main spar? If so, how? Looking at some pics it doesn't appear to be a common practice.

BTW, I am a -9A builder new to this site. Working on a QB fuse with a finish kit ordered. Based near Seattle, at Harvey Field, S43.

I used the holes on the sides of the spar for things like the buttons on the stick, COMM antenna coax and remote wires for the ELT. I had plenty of room in the two holes down the center tunnel, but it will heavily depend on where you put your antennas, how many coax wires, where you put your avionics, where the pitot/static lines need to go, etc. You can also go up under the arm rests and under the canopy rails. Lots of photos of my choices on my build log website.
