SJ Carb box and FAB cone installation

Post by cjensen »

I'm just about done with the Sam James carb box and FAB cone, so I thought I start a thread about it. I won't be installing it until next spring, but this will get the thread started by showing how it's built to the point of being ready to install...

This is the FAB kit for carb'd engines from James...note: the carb box in this picture is for an O-320, and the tear shaped blister is not for the FAB.

The top deck to the FAB cone is set in place to mark the hoe cutout-

Image

The rear cap is drilled to the cone (note for an FI vertical induction engine, the same cone and cap are used, but the cap is installed with the flange in)-

Image

A K&N Filter is used in this kit...

And it get's fit and drilled to the cone-

Back to the top deck...I cut the hole and refit the deck-

...then I made a paper template of the intake door, and test fit it-

Image

Image

The cover plate is then drilled to the top deck-

Image

The AL door now fitted-

Image

And the actuator arm fit to the door-

Image

Then I floxed and glassed the top deck to the cone (probably a little thick)-

Image

Well then I had to paint it red...

Image

The actuator and door were installed-

...the carb air flange is then installed to the cover plate, and marked to cut the slot for the actuator arm-

Image

Test fit for operation-

Image

I had a small interference with the filter-

Image

So I notched the door to clear it-

Image

Here's the correct carb box for an O-360-

Image

Drilled for the bolts-

Image

Had to paint it red...

Image

Finally, I installed the carb air flange-

That's it in a nutshell with pics. It's to the point of being ready to install on the engine, but I need to make a couple of brackets for the FAB cone to hang from. Also need to cut some SCAT tube to connect the cone to the carb box, and the carb heat flange to the exhaust, as well as the rubber tubing for it to join the cowl later on. Unfortunately, it's too damn cold to work in the garage now, so I won't get to this until next spring. But I thought I'd share this with you all for reference if you don't keep up with my site regularly.

This FAB was VERY EASY to make...I've read, and keep reading the stories of how difficult the Van's box is (I know Mike has had some mods to make with his), and while I haven't done it, I would imagine this is much easier.

We'll see how it all fits next spring...until then, hope this helps!
