Interested in other peoples procedure. Being a homebuilt I have no hot start procedure in a poh.
I'm more interested in people who don't use a fuel pressure guage for reference as-well.
I'm running an io-540 but i imagine all lycoming should be the same.

The way that used to work for me on the smaller sized 320 was to open the throttle an eighth inch or so, and crank with the mixture off. As the engine cranked i would slow enrich the mixture. It would generally turn over fairly reliably.

When I fly an injected Lyc my procedure for startup is the following:
Cold starts:
Master on
crack the throttle
fuel pump on
mixture until fuel flow gets to about 5 gph
mixture lean
crank until it kicks
mixture full rich
mixture leaned for taxi/warmup
Some people do cold starts with the fuel pump instead of the mixture like this:
Master on
crack the throttle
mixture full rich
fuel pump on until you get your prime then off again
crank until it kicks
mixture leaned for taxi/warmup
When the engine is hot, I start like this:
Master on
crack the throttle
crank engine the engine
when the engine kicks go full rich until smooth idle
mixture leaned for taxi/warmup
I have always used fuel flow, not pressure as an indicator but you could just listen to the fuel flow change. In the Cherokees (200hp & 300hp) there is a distinctly different sound in the lines when the fuel flow gets to about 5gph. The gurgling becomes smoother.
