engine failure

Post by Reheat »

Passing this along...
A homebuilt with a carburated 0-320 lost power on it's initial flight about 30 sec after takeoff. Plane was damaged some but fixable. No one could figure out the problem. Engine was torn down, carb rebuilt, etc.....
One notable was that the fuel pressure was reading a little high. It was difficult to lean out the engine. Fuel pump checked out ok. The culpret turned out to be a dirt dobber clog up in the air-oil separator canister that was so far up into the exit tube that it was not visible. Apparently this allowed the crankcase to pressurize and push on the fuel pump diaphram enough to flood the carburator.

Food for thought. Put it in your bag of tricks. If ALL the engine parameters are not in the green, don't assume anything... don't go! Get it checked out.
