Yup. But it's not where you think it would be...

It pulled the intake tube right out of the sump as well...turned it in to a normally aspirated cylinder instantly.

CJ gets the prize. Not sure what he gets, but he gets it.

This happened today on a Navajo. They took off from here this morning on a photo flight, and developed a rough running engine. This was the cause, obviously.

Hmmmm, if there is nothing foreign in the bore, the piston swelled within the jug and ripped it apart!

:o

Is this operator an lean of peak guy?

If so, he better do some more reading.

WOW!

That looks like about 5,000 to me!

My guess was gonna be "It doesn't say Subaru on it?" :P

But then I scrolled down and saw the rest of the pics.

Glad they got back safely!

What a bunch of rhetoric John! A guy loses a cylinder and you immediately want to blame it on LOP operations? Thats a bit of a stretch don't ya think?

Don't know what's wrong with it yet. The shop doesn't have time to get to it until late next week.

I will certainly give an update when I hear what happened.

$5k is probably about right...that'd be a whole NEW engine for me!! :koolaid:

Rhetoric? Hmmmm, no... just wondering. Do you know the answer to the question?

The stretch is in the cylinder!

Nope, and as such I didnt try to postulate on it or the pilots operating habits.

To postulate was the intent of the thread.

I merely complied.

Well, how's this for an explaination of what happened...

It just happens. This is a known weak spot where the top and bottom of the barrel come together. No piston swelling, no improper leaning, it just happens.

The guys in our shop have seen this several times before, and they all agree that it's not an uncommon problem with overhauled cylinders. These were second run cylinders as far as we know.

They are talking about overhauling the whole engine because of unknown damage elsewhere. So, that $5k for one cylinder just went to $40k... :o :o :o

Youch, that hurts. But then, they successfully flew it back to the airport, etc. Im glad they still have the option.
