SJ air box (cone) pics...reference

Post by cjensen »

The installation pictures of this particular area of the carb kit for the SJ cowl are almost non-existent. So I thought I'd throw some pics of mine out there to show how I did it. It may not be the most effective/efficient way to do it, but I think it will work...

First I hooked up the SCAT for carb heat and safety wired a hanger for the rear end to get it in position (no SCAT between the cone and bowl at this point).

Then I made a strap to hang from the alternator bracket to the cone, and attached the SCAT between the cone and bowl.

Then I added a bracket to stiffen the area that will take the brunt of the vibration.

Next I fiddled farted around with the nut and bolt attachment method for the carb heat cable. That sucked. My hangar neighbor had a couple Bnuts left over from his 7A build, and that was the ticket to make this a snap!

And finally, here is how I secured the carb heat cable to keep it from bouncing around and rubbing on the carb and/or exhaust...

Even without the strap that I made to help stiffen up the cone, I honestly think that with the three SCAT attachments, it would be supported just fine, but a strap/bracket helps with the "feel good"...

Hope that helps others along the way... 8)

For what its worth Chad I would be concerned about the robustness of the attachment bracket itself. I would be afraid that the airbox is going to vibrate like a tuning fork hanging from one attachment. It might be worth trying to find a second point of attachment or beefing up the one that you have.

I am concerned about it too John...I think that it will be okay though with the support from the three SCAT tubes. We'll see what happens with the ground runs, which will be done with only two SCAT tubes... :o

I couldn't get past the fact that I KNEW that rigid AL bracket would vibrate the screw right out of the fiberglass, so I ordered two sets of exhaust hangers from Vetterman to use as air cone support brackets. This is a MUCH better solution!!
