Intake gaskets leak

Post by Vlad »

All four intake gaskets were leaking on 250 h Lycoming so I ordered new ones and replaced them.

Several people warned me in private against using the sealant and it looks like they have good reasons to. However I've read somewhere that this type of sealant is widely used for exactly the same application.

I know for sure that there is a bunch of knowledgeable folks here on RB what would you say? Disassemble again and scrape it off before engine start?

Vlad,

I sent a link of this thread to our local A&P IA, Speedpants (who works for alcohol) so that he could comment. Hopefully he could lend some insight on this subject regarding methods and materials.

Obviously it shall be cleaned up but regarding whether it needs to be sealed with a product or not, I don't know. Also, if it does require a sealant, what type?

Perhaps either Speedpants or Mahlon could reply?

Vlad, the use of sealant on any intake part is not needed, and yes there is a threat of possible ingestion, the gaskets will do a fine job on their own with many hundreds of hours of worry free operation, I would recoment removing the sealant and installing new gaskets. Hope this helps....and john I also work for money too!
