Oil Filter Adapter Gasket - question

Post by BSwayze »

Hey Guys,

I'm finally installing the oil filter adapter on my engine. I got lucky. I found a nearly brand new one from a local guy for a very good price. It was on one of Van's new engines that he bought for his RV-8, and he replaced it with an angle adapter.

So anyway, I'm going through the instructions in this document: Lycoming Oil Filter Adapter Installation manual, SSP 885-2. My question has to do with using a gasket sealant on the gasket that goes between the oil filter adapter and the accessory case on the engine. Lycoming says "Use POB or an equivalent gasket sealant." What's that? What is this stuff? And where can I get it?

I have a tube of Permatex 2A "Form A Gasket Sealant", non-hardening pliable sealant. Will that work okay? How do you tell if it's equivalent to what Lycoming calls for?

I'm also wondering about some basics... One side of the gasket or both sides? And how much to use? I would think it should be applied sparingly, unlike the way we do Proseal, so globs of it don't end up breaking loose and circulating through your engine oil. Sound reasonable?

It's so hard to find information on some of these firewall-forward questions. I'm confident working on cars, all my life. But I feel like such a newbie here. Am I obsessing over details too much, or is this no big deal? Any A & P types who can help a guy out a bit?

Thanks so much!

Hi Bruce,

Aircraft Spruce sells POB #4:

A thin coat of sealant on either side of the gasket should be plenty. I use my fingers to make sure it is spread thin and evenly.

Thanks, Mike!

I have some things to order from ACS, I'll add a can of this so I have it on hand. Meanwhile, Mel Asberry, the DAR and A & P over on the other site, confirmed that my Permatex will also work. So I went ahead and got it installed. Applied it very thin with my finger to both sides. Here are some pics!
