Finishing Kit Inventory
Finishing Kit Inventory
I'm planning on ordering my finishing kit (RV-7) before the January price increase. Does anyone have an inventory of what is all packaged with the finish kit. Since I'm probably going with the James cowl and some other fairing products, I'm considering ordering ala carte what I need and eliminating some of the delete charges that Vans gets. Not sure if this is even possible. Thanks

Hey Rocko!!!
Yah!!! I got a copy!
No WAY am I gonna type it all down for ya!
I am in the same boat. Here is what I did.
I called Barbara at Vans. She needs you to place your order with all your specifics, engine size, type... etc.
She will send you the packing list. You will go over it and deselect the items you don't want.
I deleted the tires, tubes and spinner.
She then sent me a change order form and I need to return it, signed.
In the catalog there is a sample packing list for a carbureted engine.
Look that over.

Thanks CJ! I'll give her a call. I'm probably going to get an injected 360 CS Blended Airfoil. A buddy nearby is hanging a Superior 360 as I write this so I'm waiting to see how that works out. Oh by the way nice work on the vapor lines. I'm in a bit of a dilemna over installing lines in my QB wings. The best I can do is enter the root rib and dump the return line back in the first bay. Probalbly still better than Teeing into the fuel supply line. I'm still looking at alternatives at this time.

Thanks,
I don't like tee-ing into the supply line either.
Say, the thread I started over on VAF tells me that Hartzell MAY NOT OFFER a polished spinner!
I just shot an email off to American Propeller in Redding, CA. They really helped me out with some info on the PCU 5000 governor and I thoght they could answer this one easily for me.
I will let ya know what they say!

Weeeeellllll...
Van DOES NOT support the IO-390.
I am not sure that I can either!
But like any good father I am going to give it a try and with any luck I will foster a nice, young, healthy airplane!
They tell me that the finish kit you need to specify is that for an IO-360-A1B6. It has the correct engine mount, cowling and what nots.
Besides, it also gives me an excellent "Plan B"! If for whatever reason the 390 idea heads south, a 360 will work out just fine!
I want the 390 and so far, it is still my principle goal!

I'm in the same boat guys. I plan on ordering before the end of the year and need to decide what I am getting from Van's and what I am not.
CJ, do they give you full credit for items you deduct? I've read they do and then elsewhere I've seen that they only give you 75% credit.
If the latter is true it would be wise to order things seperately.
I plan on using a SJ cowl and haven't decided on wheel pants yet. I know I don't want the tires Van's sells and have considered upgrading the brakes also. I am going to drop the empenage and gear fairings and either make my own or get them from fairingsetc.
If CJ can find us a good deal on nice polished spinners, I might drop that also.
As you can see this may be worth the time it takes to order everything seperately if they do not give 100% credit.

The package price does net you a total discount they say. I never did the math. I am just going on their word.
The discount is miserable for deleted items. I don't have the invoice in front of me right now, but I seem to recall the spinner kit as being like $123?
I am sure the Hartzell will be some serious BLING!
Perhaps a group buy on those WOULD be in order!?!
Hmmmmmm...
HEY! You were out there in the shop working tonight, weren't you John!
I got virtually NOTHING done! You are going to pass me!!!

I worked a little bit tonight. The aft fuse is now ready to come apart for deburring and dimpling. I should have started on it tonight but decided I better research engines and the like a little bit. I know what I would like to have but have to make sure it will fit the budget.
Actually I'm sure it won't fit any budget of mine, but I need to decide if I can figure out a way to finaggle it.

I would like to get the big daddy too, but I am 99% sure I'm gonna get a parallel IO-360 and pump it up a little.captain_john wrote:Thomas, which engine will you go with?

Would rather have a low compression engine that is loafing, but with the CG constraints of the -8 I think I'm better off with a lighter engine.
Plus, I am seeing lots of stuff around in these races and stuff that the guys with the monster engines aren't always the fastest

Re: Finishing Kit Inventory
When mine arrived, I typed up a spreadsheet of the inventory, down to each bolt, so that I'd remember where I put everything. I stuck it in the file section on the yahoogroup. (I also stuck it on the RV Builder's Hotline, which ya need to subscribe to.... hint)Rockyjs wrote:I'm planning on ordering my finishing kit (RV-7) before the January price increase.
