fun with elevators

Post by tmbg »

yeah, those 'bend me up' tabs on the left elevator and trim tab really suck. I was thoroughly dissatisfied with how those came out. The tabs on the elevator, when bent, started to crack in a couple places, and I had to stop drill the cracks. Finally I got fed up and hacked it all off, made a form block, and beat out a couple of end ribs. The trim tab looks great now (although it has some twist to it), but since I cut out the bits with the cracks and stop drills on the elevator, there was a good 3/8" gap between the elevator and the trim tab. I made the end rib on the elevator have very long flanges, and positioned it for a nice small even gap, and drilled it into position. Pop riveted it in, and mixed up some resin/microballoons/flox paste and sealed it up. I'm waiting for that to dry to see how it comes out; I've never worked with this mess before. I think it'll come out pretty nicely, and won't be noticeable at all once painted!

Man, the west systems epoxy is SO UNBELIEVABLY MUCH BETTER than the crap you can get at walmart :D I love having a spruce so close by... 20 minute flight, an excuse to fly, and I'll buy a heck of a lot more in person than I will mail-order. I've been there three times in the last week and a half, and spent almost $700 :)
