Fuel cost OUTRAGE!

The kid I just hired here just walked off a sub, he said the food was great too. And to keep this relevant to the thread; they hardly ever stopped for gas.

Just saw this post.

Yeah, my commute is 100 miles each way, which is why I take the train to Boston and work from home whenever possible.

Even working at L.L. Bean I was burning a tank of fuel each week driving 1.5 hours roundtrip in my 20 mpg car. I really miss my old car from that respect -- 32 mpg even at 80 mph. I also miss my shortest commute -- 8 miles roundtrip when I was self employed and had an office on the river beside my wife's business.

If someone came out with some sort of cute electric or alternate fuel source vehicle that cost a reasonable amount of money, I would buy it in a second as my primary vehicle and put my car aside for occasional weekend drives or for when I had to tote family around.

I have to some extent been agonizing over the engine purchase decision based on current fuel prices. I just feel as if we are approaching a turning point for GA fuel and engine technology. I just don't know how long it will be before we really need to plan for alternate fuel sources. I am pretty sure it will happen in my flying career, and probably sooner rather than later.

I would like to to make an electric car and drive it to school where I can plug it in and drive home again! I am fortunate to have a mere 11 mile commute. It is the shortest commute of my life. I used to do 3-4,000 miles each month when I was in sales! Glad I am not doing that anymore! Of course, I made more money back then.

Any way you slice it, fuel is a RIPOFF!

This is another reason I will be building a smaller lighter plane that has an engine that can run on auto fuel.

And again, riding the bike to work at least two days a week to save on gas. I'll bike to work as much as possible as soon as I get in better shape.

ya know i get a feeling that ther are about to be aloooooot of planes for sale. maybe i should hold hold out on getting that hangar and bargain with them for 1/2 price. seems i'll be the only one at the field. speaking of which i have a hangar in florence ( 12+- miles from home 6 miles from work,TOWERED, EMERGENCY SVS, FBO) for 200$ a month. now darlington ((12 +-miles from home 17 from work. NON TOWERED, NO SECURITY,NO FBO) i work in florence) has two and they are 125-145$ a month. buuuut they say no working aloowed on airplanes in t hangars.. and that is from the FAA. any of you ever heard of such...oh and btw, they have a fire truck of the county's stored in one of them uncle FAA made them move out. good with the bad

Weez, I used to manage an airport here in Washington State, 3W7. The FAA does not regulate what you can and cannot do on the airport. It is the owner or airport manager who regulates what goes on at the airport. I would ask who ever is in charge to show me the FA regulation. I will guarentee you they cannot do it!

Dan, thanks for the info. i felt it was BS. could they have some stipulations to what is stored at the hangars because they used some kind of "improvement money" from the FAA to build the hangars?
which brings to mind all the people, Capt. john for instance, that talk as if they have purchased a hangar. how does that work....could i have my own built at a public airport?

Well Willie, I was going to chime in on this one last night. I agree with Dan. Sounds like Bravo Sierra to me. Accepting Fed money doesn't normally have strings like THAT attached. The feds just want to see it used in an infrastructure type of way. Not dictating WHAT happens inside.

Airports will vary from manager to manager (and the manager just parrots what the Airport Commission rules) allowing what happens on the field. I am fortunate that KPYM is GA friendly and they LOVE RV's! The manager told me that if he had the where with all, he would build one!

Anyways, here they will let you build on the field with some restrictions. As far as we are concerned, they will allow us to build anything LARGER than 5,500 square feet. They don't want a random town of tin shacks strewn across the field. They also want to know if you have a commercial interest. If you do, it needs to be divulged and agreed upon by the board.

Any way you slice it, you build the structure and lease the land. The building is always yours and they can't take it away. I can understand the apprehension in placing a multi-hundred thousand dollar structure on someone else's land, but I am considering doing just that someday. It really isn't as risky as it sounds.

Maybe a restriction on the storage of hazardous materials?

I don't think the FAA has any say on the building inside a hanger issue, but if you use entitlement money or NIPIAS (I don't remember the right acronym), they do actually have a large amount of stupid rules, and can threaten to pull future funding or make the airport authority pay back money it has received if violations are found.

Keep in mind, If you were an airport manager, who would you be more concerned about keeping happy--your main funding source, or one of us PITA pilots

Well, I just spoke with my airport manager and he tells me that these rules (much like the FAR's) are loosely worded and up to the interpretation of the reader.

It is his belief (and mine) that the Feds aren't the real reason behind this. It is the airport commission hiding behind a loosely worded rule.

Any way you slice it, it is their airport and you need to play by their rules, or not... and pay the consequences!

As the Massachusetts State Police likes to say, "It is better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission"!

I live by that mantra! You should try it too! It works.

no doubt the way it is...i feel certain they are fed up with the current airport manager and are kicking him out July 1st. and now are using anything they can to help him out the door. i know in my heart when im there it wont be a problem. i told the county manager i was building a plane and was ready to bring it to the airport for final assembly and he clearly said "we would love to have you" he said he was looking for an A&P to start some type of buisiness there and i mentioned i was one and he seemed to dig that.....we'll see.

Did my IFR long cross country today and filled up at JST. I was almost giddy when I saw the price as $4.80LL. Is that insane or what?
