Jeff Orear...your AL windscreen details please...

Post by cjensen »

Hey Jeff,

I am considering doing my windscreen fairing in aluminum rather than nasty 'glass. Got any pics or info on how you did it?

There is a CD tutorial out there on how to, but I'd rather save the $35, and one week wait, and start this weekend...

BTW...keep your eye out for boats...I'll be looking in another week or so!! :o

Chad:

You may save $35.00, but its gonna cost you a beer, and not some fruity one.....at the Otter!

I followed the instructions I found in an RVator article. If you can get ahold of one of the ****years of the RVator book, it should be in there. I can make you a copy and bring it to the Otter.

It is really not hard at all. I think it is easier to do than messing with fiberglass.

This is the template you make. You mark it every 3 inches or so and then record what the angle is between the windshield and the fuse skin. That will determine what angle the flange will be bent at each of these locations.

This is a bending brake you make. The .025 sheet is clamped between these two pieces of wood so you can bend the flange on the fairing.

If you want more info outta me, its gonna cost you another beer......

Plenty of boats to choose from up here. Seems like everyone is selling them along with their campers. There's what you need Chad! A camper!

If you need more info to get going on it this weekend, give me a call 715-582-3059 or 715-923-2613 (cell)

Thanks for the pics and info Jeff! I'm still up in the air (surprise, surprise) over this. I am going to go ahead and seal the glass to the skin today with the little clips and flox, then decide.

I found the article in the RVator last night, and read it.

I'll buy you a beer at the Otter regardless!! How's that!

Hmmm...I DO need a camper!! :bang:

Its a deal on the beer.

One thing tho...I did not use any clips or flox. The fairing does it all.

I really do think you should get a camper. After all, you have Brad come all the way from CA just to put him up in a stink'n tent!

Just looking out for ya Brad!

Flox is on already, but it won't make a difference...

I keep looking for a pop up camper, none around here...

It's Brad's tent, so he did it to himself!

Well, I ended up 'glassing the windscreen. I wrestled with this idea until Sunday morning, and decided to just figure out how to work with the crap. I hate it. I'm pleased with the result, but I hate fiberglass. I'll NEVER build a fast glass ride.

There's still LOTS of finish work to do on this...

Glassing Canopy

Post by Bob Barrett »

Chad,

You did a beautiful job of fiberglassing your canopy. My painter wishes I would have done that good of a job fiberglassing my wind screen on my slider.

You do quality work!

Bob

Jeff,

Bill H. did his with metal like yours. It looks GREAT! I would like to think that when the time comes, I will do mine with metal too.

Chad, you should rent something nice for Brad and I. After all, my trip is equally as long!

:)

See you all soon at the Otter!
