HP fuel pump plumbing

Post by hydroguy2 »

Heard a few horror stories about bend the complex tubes for the HP fuel pump. Also I don't own a good flaring tool, so was thinking of ordering Bonaco lines all around. Money is tight, so figured I better at least see what all the fuss was about. Borrowed a nice RotoFlare tool and bender from my friend Marlin. While at his place I checked out his plumbing job, he said "never again" as it took him 13hrs and many many feet of wasted tubing.

Once home, I dove head first into the challenge. Used 1/4 poly to approximate the bends and tube lengths. On the first double bend, I made the smoothest, nicest looking piece.....which came up 3/8" too short....Aaargh. But then I whipped out 3 tubes that amazingly fit and looked good too. Flares all came out good & didn't forget any flare nuts either.

2hrs later I have this to show for my effort. and only wasted 10" of tubing.

The fuel lines and the pump installation in my 6A were simplier! I wasted some tubing also. I think I ended up having to buy another 3 feet. Looks Great!

Brian-

Looks great! I did mine in a similar amount of time and wasted material. Definitely one of those tasks that u spend more time worrying about than doing. Oh wait, that's all the tasks on the project!

LOL yep I waste more time worrying about tackling something than doing it. Also I have trouble actually making a decision about what to buy.

But managed to plumb the wings to valve tonight. Turned out good enough, I won't be buying the braided lines from Bonaco....what actually saved some money!!!

OK I didn't really save any money, since I spent $300 buying knick knacks off VAF. (throttle quadrant and remote Dynon stuff)

Looks very nice Brian. I am pretty sure I'll be doing the same thing some time in the distant future. Having the right tools makes a big difference.

Yep good tools make a difference. Luckily I have a friend who likes to buy tools(and has money), I borrowed these from him. A Rolo-Flare and Imperial Bender, both from Avery.

Now I need to return them :(

Fortunately I was able to borrow those same tools from two different friends of mine! It sure saved a lot of money but now they are back with their owners. Hopefully I will not need them again!!! :)

Just wait until you see what capt John and I have to show you.

We both bought Andair's new pump set-up. I'll post some pics later.

I was going to bring that up. Thats a good setup. Funny how it takes forever for things like that to make it to the aircraft industry. Fire Engine pumps have been doing that stuff for decades!

Here's a picture of then new Andair set-up. And complete installation drawings can be found here.

It's a little hard to see but it is a straight shot from the fuel selector into a filter then into the interally regulated pump then out to the firewall. Andair was selling a kit at OSH which included the pump, filter, mounting bracket, selector, bulkhead fitting and hardware for $950.

I was originally going to say how expensive the AndAir solution was compared to the Van's stock pump until I looked up how much they want for the fuel pump now! - $635 for the fuel pump + $205 for the valve = $840 for the Van's way. Not a bad upgrade for $110!

With the Andair set-up, you still have to buy the housing from Van's but I can't imagine that would cost more than $25.

Andy had the Van's guys in his booth and is trying to get them to carry the pump. I'm gonna be pissed if it shows up in the catalog for $750. :)

Just buy it from Andair. I have been lusting for their fuel valve and just cant seem to stomach $200 for something that comes in my fuse kit already. Sure is pretty though ...

Dag-nabbit, I missed that. I even checked out their booth. I must have been drawn to the flashy lights and switches. Hope they have info on the web. Did you get any pics/info?
