Dimple nutplates?

Post by s10sakota »

Hi all...quick update...HS, VS, and Rudder done!

Now I'm working on the elevators. I spent the day cutting, trimming, sanding, drilling, de-burring, and dimpling all of the stiffeners.

So...now I'm working on the electric trim reinforcement plate (E-615PP)

I have seven K-1100-06 nutplates to rivet to E-615PP and the plans indicate to use AN426AD3-3.5 rivets for the nutplates. Obviously I will need to dimple the re-enforcement plate for the countersunk rivets, but how do I attach the nutplates? Do the nutplates sit on top of the dimple? Do I dimple the little tabs on the nutplates? It doesn't look like it's possible to dimple those!

Thanks for any tips!

I believe you need to counter sink the rivet holes on the nutplates. Use a countersink and make a countersunk in a piece of wood for the plate nut to nestle into, then drill pilot holes in the wood for the rivet holes and then countersunk the platenuts for the dimples in the skin. I will try to find a picture for you, I need to get on my computer to find it. Hope this helps. The only pic I could find, no holes drilled or countersunk. You can use a hand held deburr tool with a countersink bit in it.

Small diameter female dimple die

Post by lgcdmb »

I dimple the nutplates, but in order to do so you need a female dimple die that has a smaller OD that the standard one.

Avery has one here: http://www.averytools.com/prodinfo.asp?number=14870

Cleaveland has this one: http://www.cleavelandtoolstore.com/prod ... r=DIE4263S

The right tool makes the job very easy!

I dimpled mine, using the female die with a flat side.

Thanks for the tips guys. I thought the nutplates were too thin to countersink but I see that they are not.

I ended up dimpling mine. I was careful to keep the entire bottom of the nutplate straight and they came out great. They are all riveted on now and I've started dimpling the skin and getting it ready to back rivet the stiffeners on...
