Tight spot dimpler

Post by captain_john »

Hey All,

I made one of those "Tight spot dimplers" but have yet to try it!

Image

It looks like it will come in handy on trailing edge rib holes and such.

I used some scrap bar stock, drilled a 3/16" hole in one end and drilled and countersunk the female side into a piece of flat stock.

Looks like it should work fine!

Whacha think?

John,
I just made one last week and I have been using it for dimpling the last stiffener holes next to the trailing edge. Works ......OK, but not as good as the C-frame dimpler. I use the shaft out of the dimpler to tap with the hammer. It seems easy to get smiles from not keeping the shaft perpendicular. Also, for some reason, my driven dimples are not as crisp as the C-frame dimples. There seems to be more of a shallow valley surrounding the dimple.

I just used one countersunk screw into the bench holding the 4 X 2 bar which I overhang the bench by an inch.

I use the other side of the bar to set rivets in the trailing edges of ribs shooting the gun down onto the bar which rests on the shophead, the other end on the back-rivet plate.

Thanks Guys,

Mustang Pete,

Do you find it better or worse than the pop rivet dimpler? The pop dimpler doesn't really get a crisp dimple either, so I would compare it to that.

It is just difficult to get those last 1 or 2 dimples no matter what you do.

Captain John,
I haven't tried the pop rivet dimpler yet. Mostly because I haven't used any pop rivets yet. Maybe I should have......

Pete,

The POP Rivet dimpler works fairly effectively and simply.

Short dough... put one on your list.

I have'nt seen this pop-rivet dimpler. What is it and where do I get it? I haven't seen it in any of the aircraft tool supply catalogs. I'd like to try it.

Well, it is designed to fit in a pop rivet gun and uses a nail for a center.

Avery sells them, along with others.

Ping their site a look up dimpling tools. They are at www.averytools.com and are very good to deal with!
