Yet more tools ..
I just got done ordering yet more tools. Yipes this is getting expensive. I sure hope to get a Christmas Ham from Avery in appreciation. Hmm, more like a picture of the one that I just put on their table

Uh, Noooope. For now I'll just build up muscle with a hacksaw and put that $1XX towards the Avery bill. I dont have much cutting of thick stock left in the tail. Well, at least I hope I dont.

Well, I prefer to use the nice bigass bandsaw at school... but in a pinch I use my neighbors cheapo Delta $100 jobber from Lowes.
The cheapo one will take BIG bites if you feed too fast and deform the metal. Feed slowly and you are OK.

Cutting Aluminum
I dont like to deal with the Band saw. What I do like to do is use a Porta Band. Very nice to use and bring it over to your work not the other way around but there are still issues with the throat size. I just went out to the shop and found three different types of blades that fit on a 7 1/4 Circular saw. One is a fiber masonry blade which says on the label " for use on soft non ferrous metals" (last sentence). 1 Metal blade with 4 teeth per inch for soft non ferrous metal. 1 metal blade that looks smooth with expansion groves every 1 1/2 inch says "cuts by friction". I have sucessfully cut 3/8 Aluminum with the 4TPI blade. A standard Carbide tipped blade will work too. That is assuming you can not shear it or use a good center snip tool due to size or thickness constraints. The Circular saw can make very nice cuts if done carefully, it is horrendously loud cutting sheet stock in this manner. Use your ear plugs and head muffs. Good luck. Don.

Re: Cutting Aluminum
The Porta-band is ungainly in my hands. I am not sure I could make a clean cut with it, however the blades come in a nice 32 TPI pattern and are quite conducive.Don P-Factor wrote:I dont like to deal with the Band saw. But as far as the circ saw goes...

And just how do you think this thread got started?
Hey, at least I kept that potentially expensive information to myself
