Aviation Myth Busters

Post by svanarts »

JohnR had a great idea. What are some aviation myths you'd like to see busted?

We've already covered lightning strike exploding primered airplane.

OK, maybe it isn't exactly a "myth," but I'm getting pretty tired of airplanes in movies and "documentaries" plunging wildly out of control whenever they run out of fuel. Just saw a Bermuda Triangle thing where they had a recreation/dramatization of the five Avengers that went missing in WW2. Of course, as soon as they ran out of fuel, the planes plunged to the earth (ocean) like boulders, pilots screaming in fear.

I've got one ... pulling the power back a little just after takeoff (a couple hundred feet AGL) helps save engine wear?

I think this is a good idea so I sent Tom Gresham from Wings to Adventure an email and suggested they have a segment on the show each week highlighting this type of thing. Some items covered could be directed toward the GA people and some to the general public.

We'll see if he responds and what he thinks. You never know unless you ask!

I wonder if he'll try to get that guy with the beanie and the big moustache to help out?

Actually didn't those guys do an aviation segment on Myth Busters once? They where shooting turkeys through some old junk aircraft windshields.
