Firewall forward kit

Post by tshort »

Bill and I were talking about this yesterday ... I didn't realize there was another "kit" to buy ... on the order of $4K or so!
I guess you can piece this stuff together yourself but I doubt it would save much money.
What are you guys planning on doing? I wonder why they don't include this on the "kit price" total... ?

Yup, Tis stuff you could put together yourself.

Mostly motor stuff and therefore not sheetmetal and it probably would be incorrect to call it part of the "kit".

Other kit makers don't do it either.

They do say that if you are going Lycosaurus, it makes a good package price!

Ahhh, the firewall forward kit...

That is the reason that the Eggaru package becomes attractively priced. The clone engines do look like a bargin, until you start adding the firewall forward kit and such...with everything added up, they are really close, and the Egg package is actually a little cheaper when as CS prop is put together with a traditional engine. Not trying to start any flame wars here, and I may end up with a clone, but people do tend to forget about the additional costs of firewall forward stuff. :)

Thats par of the course. The thing that I noticed is that with the FWF (and
electrical kit for that matter) is that you really need to be on board with
doing the way they set it up. Once you deviate it almost makes sense to just
get everthing on yer own.

I have put mine together myself. I am not anywhere near four thousand. Certainly there are some advantages. I am still working on my baffels but that would be true even if I bought the kit.

So what all is in this kit? Does anyone have the packing list from Van's that shows what it includes? It would help a person make a more informed decision about which way to go.

Remember that the exact parts in the firewall forward kit will depend on the model of RV you are building, the engine, and the prop. This is the raw packing list for an RV-8 with a Superior XP-IO-360 and a constant speed prop (note that some items will still need to be substituted to provide for the horizontal induction on this engine):

Rumor has it, the FF Kit is a worthwhile investment. It is supposed to save time and effort, but not much money (if any).

Also I hear that the factory Van's baffles are weak and don't last too well. Maybe making your own would be advisable. I think I will make mine out of thicker material when the time comes.

...at least the parts that look flimsy.

If you get the Vans baffles, you could beef 'em up a bit. Just add abit of stuff here and there where you think they might be weakest?

Weak Baffels???

Post by Bob Barrett »

Van's Baffels come with instructions concerning beefing up the baffels. If you are a good experienced A&P and have made baffels it can probably be done but if you are a first timer at it like I am buy them!!! I have been working on my since June and have some work left to do. I am trying to avoid having to order new parts because I screwed up. I am not a fast or experienced builder. I have three friends who have used Van's baffels and none have had trouble with theirs and some of them have a lot of hours on their airplane. I think the material is strong enough.
