I had a visitor at the FBO today. No, not Mr. Egg himself, but one of his COMPLETELY SATISFIED customers. I talked to him for about a half hour before they took off, and he told me that if he had to do it all over again, he would do the EXACT same thing, not even a second thought would be given. He is also competely satisfied with the IVO Magnum prop. They've been finished with it, and flying it for a little over a year without anything needing done, other than change the oil. It has the H-6 in it, and he's had no issues with cooling, but he has made the oil cooler mod below the prop. Here's the airplane...

Nope. He does use car gas most of the time though.

always wondered but never really asked about it-

one of the benefits of an automotive based engine is the lower cost of automotive grade fuel that the engines are able to run. I assume that you would buy your own fuel at the local station on the way to your local airport to fuel the plane while at home - maybe even store abit in the hanger in some fuel jugs.

But what happens when you are traveling and needing to refuel at an airport that doesn't offer auto grade fuel? If you travel mostly to nearby locations and can get back and forth without the need for refueling then no problem, but what happens on longer cross country trips?

run 100LL as necessary and install hardened valve seats prior to engine install?

This is straight from the Egg website...

100LL can be used to operate your engine. This fuel might be fazed out in favor of the more environmental friendly UL82 which you can use in your engine along with automobile fuel.

Hmmm, those 2 sentences are not very comforting to me. I would have expected something more explicit to the concerns, ie valve seats, fouling, etc.

There's a ton of discussion on this on the Yahoo group. I'll do a search and see what I can find. That quote was just an excerpt from a paragraph on their website to answer the 'does it burn 100LL' question.

Tell me, does E10 eat proseal? The grapevine had some kind of story floating around to that effect.

E10 is all we can get up here in Massachusetts. It is terrible stuff and is wreaking HAVOC on the water and with some motorcycles.

Terrible stuff! It costs more than ever before and is the worst fuel product we have ever had! It has the lowest BTU's of any autofuel yet!

Yeah, we have E10 here as well, but we also have two other options without it. That's the first I've heard of E10 eating sealant...

He best look into it before he ventures up here!

...and faze IS spelled that way too! I see it too often as PHASE and have forgotten the other spelling. Besides, he is using it correctly in that spelling.

In true WV fashion, I've decided to close the door on the Subaru package again.

I've left the Subaru Yahoo group, which seems to be the revalation move in terms of kicking the habit. Two major factors have swayed me away from it recently...

#1 I've read most of the Egg installation manual, and most of it seems pretty straight forward. Then I get to the electrical section. ONE HUNDRED FIFTY-NINE steps just for wiring the engine!!

I was SHOCKED!!

#2 I came across a builder's website, http://brian76.mystarband.net/RV-7Ahome.htm Brian Meyette. He stuggled for a long time in deciding which engine to go with. He eventually chose the Egg H-6, then changed his mind to get the 2.5 STi engine. He received his engine in April of 2005 with the expectation that he'd have the thing flying in time for Oshkosh. I've read the entire engine section beginning to end, and as of October 17th, he still has not started the engine!! There's just too much there to do.

So while I've earned my nickname, I'd like to exercise the wind today, and say that I'm happy with the direction I think I'm gonna go.

Keepin' it simple and light.

BTW, I'm about to order my fuselage, and I've filled out the order form for the tailwheel.
