Feeling real dumb and tired right now

Post by captain_john »

Tell me people...

It is almost midnight here on the right coast and I am whittling away at various chunks of metal and my brain just left the building.

Look at this aluminum bar:

Image

As you can see, Van says that it needs to be cut WITH the grain. I am thinking I have it laid out properly, but would like confirmation.

I guess what is blowing my mind is that he gives you a hunk if 1.5" bar to cut 1.5" THE LONG WAY from. Two pieces!!!

When you think about it, one slice of 1.25" stuff would be fine if you are gonna make two .5" wide strips out of it!

I dunno... what do you think? I think I am overthinking this little piece of metal!

Anyone???

BTW, this is on DWG 20.

Looks to me like you have it set up correctly. And, yes, I do think you are overthinking this hunk of metal... :P

Wait until morning, check your measurements again, and then cut.

Bad things happen when you're tired and foggy.

Looks right to me CJ. If it isn't, and you find out that you cut it wrong, make sure and tell us so I don't do the same thing! :D

Looks right to me CJ.
Hope you got some sleep last night!

P.S. I think the grain direction is important because of the lengthwise 3/32 x 1/64" notch

Makes sense to me. As far as the size of the piece supplied, maybe it is that wide so you don't need to use any of the metal with a radius and still have enough to be a bit sloppy with the saw when cutting the two pieces out.

Thanks all,

I have cast my vote in favor of the piece being correctly laid out as well.

I haven't had a chance to cut it yet, as I have been gone today bangin' out an electrical side job that paid for my Infinity stick grips!

8)

I expect that when the piece is cut, I will feel a difference between the crosscut and the rip cuts and that should corroborate the layout as being correct.

I will let ya know what I discover!

CJ, I cut my pieces like that this afternoon. I'm sure it is correct. There are a lot of fabbed parts in that F-705 assembly.

Ummm, YAH!!!

It looks like whole fuse might be this way from this standpoint!

After I do some stuff around the house I am gonna get back to it. I think it is right too.

Are you doing tip up? Did you make those massive angles that attach to the seat back frame yet?

I cut them a bit too proud and had to sand the CR@P out of 'em to get them the right size!

CON-firmed...

Image

I flew this one in by hand (hacksaw, it is my weapon of choice for these cuts) and I could tell by the drag on the saw and the sound of the blade that the rips were the long cuts and the crosscuts were the short ones.

It also stands to reaon that when you look at the placement of the part on the F-705, it SHOULD be a bidirectional layout like Van suggests.

I honestly don't think it matters THAT much and I am SURE that many planes were assembled with this part cut the OTHER way and they aren't falling out of the sky!

Buuuut, WE know bettah!

Now all you need to do is add a chain to the 'T' and you have some 'Ganstah Bling'.

You mean these? I cut the width down and then I took them down with the belt sander on the angle portion. Worked pretty well.

I finally got all of these items finished up and clecoed together. Still might have to trim a seat belt mount or two though.

I'm trying to figure out the F-705 K right now. The plans aren't very clear or I'm missing something. :? Guess it is time to check some websites!

...and yah, the "K" stuff isn't that clear. I think it is because it really doesn't matter that much.

I have the part all marked and ready to go on the brake. I left uncut so both left and right will be bent identially and simultaneously. I just need to bring it to school or the airport and put it on the brake. I know it could be done in other ways, but hey... I can find a brake someplace.

I think that is one of them parts where there is nuttin' to it but ta do it!

CJ, I think your right and that is the approach I took!

The only thing is it appears that the fit will be pretty tight on the but maybe it is supposed to be. Here is a bad photo of the end. I can get a piece of .032 in there with the blue plastic on it so I guess it will be okay.

Image

I'll bet that piece you reordered would have been fine. With that said I would probably have done the same thing. I don't know how much room we will have to work with in that area when it comes time to put the wings on.

By the way, to get the 1/8 inch I just clecoed the front spacer in place (without the F-705 K), set a piece of 3/4 X 3/4 X .125 angle against it, clamped the .063 angle in place and drilled away. Worked great.

John, I dunno but, that seems like the rear position is gonna be a wicked fug snit... ummmm, I mean snug fit!

I haven't looked ahead to see how thick the seat back is that slides in there is, but you have hardly a gap there!

I would work on that a bit and open it up some. I am willing to bet that flattening out your 4 degree bend into some sort of offset just might do the trick real nice like!

CJ, that is what I am planning on doing. Haven't decided just how yet but I'll come up with a method. :) Sort of a joggle of sorts is what I have in mind.
