Introduction - An aspiring builder

Post by Marlowe »

Greetings fellow aviation enthusiasts,

I am member #705 and just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I checked around on the board to see how everyone else introduced themselves, but didn't find any, so here goes my version.

I am a 27 year old youth pastor with too many hobbies, too little time, and not nearly enough money. I work and live at a small church in Lewes, DE, just minutes from the Atlantic. Ever since I was a kid I've wanted to build my own airplane, even before I learned about kits and RV's. Now it's just a matter of time. My plan is to finish up my seminary degree, get my PPL, and start building. Somewhere in the mix I will need to get a house with room to build. My wife is excited about me flying and building as long as it means she gets to see her mom more often, and maybe an occasional trip to the Bahamas or Florida Keys. : ) I realize that while building I'm going to have to sacrifice kayaking, wind-surfing, beach bumming, woodworking, and speaker building; but I know it will be worth it.

I'm excited and really looking forward to my first pilgrimage to OshKosh this summer. I will be going with two pilots from our church (potential RV builders).

I hope you all got your "Holiday Challenges" done and off to a great start for a record building year in 07!

Happy Building,

josh m

:welcome: Josh. Sounds like you have a plan, make sure you repeat it to yourself over and over, that way it will actually happen. Ask questions, do research, and before you know it, you will have a really good idea what you want to build and how to get there.

Welcome Josh! You've come to the right place. We're just a big bunch of plane-building, fun-loving goof-balls. If you're looking for anger, strife, foul language, high-handedness, and general argumentativeness, then you've come to the wrong place.

There are a lot of fellow believers on this forum as well. So browse all you like ask all the questions you like, and above all (as Spike would say) have fun!

Welcome Josh, good to see you made it !! :welcome:

As I mentioned on the phone we started getting a house at Osh last year and looks like we will do it again this year. We started a thread on that in this forum yesterday. Dave Rodgers I believe is going to head it up again, so, a big thank you to him.

Im glad that were able to be directed here. Next time I fly out to Georgetown Ill let you know and maybe we can do lunch. Maybe I can get you out to this side of the bay so you can check out my project.

Hang out, have fun, and please ask lots of questions.

Hello Spike,

Thanks for the invitation. I mentioned you were working on a 9a to Bob (flying friend who lives on Eagle Crest, a private airstrip in Lewes) and he was interested in taking a look at your project too. How far are you from Hagerstowne (or Hagersville, something like that)? We may fly out there someday for a little visit.

Thank you all for your kind welcomes, I look forward to meeting some of you at Osh.

Welcome Josh.... here is some unsolicited advice: The sooner you start the sooner you get to fly! I "planned" my build for 2 years - I should have just started! It's a ton of fun, and the people you meet (online and in person) are great.

There are a few RV shows on the east coast. When you get your PPL you can fly to them easily. I remember one every year at Lawerance MA and one in Fulton NY.

Hi Josh! :welcome: to Rivetbangers!

It is a great group here and I think you'll feel right at home. Feel free to ask questions. If you go to Osh make sure and get in on the Rivertbangers night out so we can all meet you. It's a good time.

Hello and thanks for the warm welcome everyone.

Last night my wife sat in an beautiful 62 Piper Colt and just loved it! I call that a HUGE step toward getting my PPL. She suddenly realized that the plane and my PPL would cost less than her Altima did three years ago and she'd be able to be at her mom's in an hour (even though I told her that along with other airplane propoganda many times before).

I'd love to go to some of the Eastern Shore fly-ins, especially if they have RVs. I don't have my PPL yet, but I have friends that do! They are also interested in getting an RV, so I should be in luck. I'll check into those shows and see if I'll be able to make any of them. Thanks for the heads up, I hadn't heard of them previously.

The Bangers night out sound like fun. I'm hoping to be at Osh from Tues night to Sat morning.

Happy Building,

-jm
