Do you need to renew reserved 'N' numbers?

I think one needs to renew reserved 'N' numbers - does the FAA send a reminder when due, or is it your responsibility to accomplish before the anniversary?

Renew once a year, and the FAA will send a little card saying it's due for renewal. I just did mine last week.

They do send a card as Chad mentioned but i put a reminder in for a couple of weeks before just in case.

The first year I had one reserved, they did send a renewal notice card out.
But the next year I paid it a little early, and never saw a renewal card.

I figured I didn't want to lose what I chose, so I just reminded my self to renew early just incase.

How early did you renew Dave? Only reason I ask is that mine was due for renewal July 1 this year, and the FAA sent me a renewal card the second week of May. Seems they are sending out renewal reminders two months in advance...which is terribly surprising for the FAA...

Maybe if you pay more than two months in advance, they don't send the card.

Oh, and BTW, even if paying early, that does not move your renewal up for the next year. I thought of this after I did the online payment to renew. When they sent the confirmation email, my paid date was May 20-something, but my purge date was still August 1 (purge date is one month after it expires, and becomes available again).

Sounds about right to me Chad.

They must be getting more efficient these days.
I figure I won't have to renew next year since I'll probably register it later this Fall.

I just registered mine. I wanted to get it done as you hear horror stories about how long it takes the FAA to complete the process. I ended up getting my registration certificate within 3 weeks.

Chad what are you going to do if the FAA asks the type of engine for the tail number?

Well, that's one thing you HAVE to have before you can register the aircraft. Trust me, I've already tried doing it without an engine serial number. Even if you know what type of engine you are going to use, you have to have a SERIAL NUMBER for said engine before you can register it.

I've been working with Chris Sanford at Aero Records on this, and they will not submit it to the FAA without all info. If any one is ready to register, I would recommend Chris. He helped my friend Rob get his 7 registered, and did it in 7 days!

Why not just register it yourself through the FAA?

Because doing it yourself invites mistakes and delays. It can take up to 120 days, 6 MONTHS!, to get it all done if there are mistakes. We just had somebody do it themselves last summer on a Malibu, and they just got their proper paperwork last month...and that's just a transfer of ownership, not registering new.

I've registered something around 30 airplanes in the last 5 years, and we ALWAYS use a title company to do it. They get it right everytime.

Just as a data point, when I was ready to register my RV-4 I called my local FSDO and they were really helpful. They told me exactly what they wanted to see and sent me a packet with all the forms. I seem to recall it took about 3 weeks to process but I will be the first to admit that the Fresno FSDO is probably much easier to work with than other FSDOs.
