Latch Update

Post by bullojm1 »

So I was playing around with the Hartwell latch over the weekend and I don't really like it. When you open it, it springs open with a hell of a force. It snapped my fingers pretty good on a number of occasions. So today I was hunting around for a new solution and I stumbles across the KM610-64 latch. This simply just requires a round hole in the oil door. Here is a pic of how the finished product looks:

Image

I found a great deal on them at B&B Aircraft Supplies (913-884-5930) - $5 per latch! The lady who I spoke with at B&B was very nice and get this -- they send me the part, and when I get it, I send them the check! I have never run into a business who has ever done this! They have a $10 minimum purchase.

The only downside I could find about these latches is they tend to "eat" away at the aluminum/fiberglass they latch onto. Someone recommended a great solution of using a strip of stainless steel for it to latch onto.

I will report my findings once I get the latch installed. I will have an extra latch available to anyone who wants it for the pro-rated cost.

I'd rather have that style, too, after playing a bit with the Hartwell type in my baggage compartment mod. I will be happy to buy that one - you can just throw it in with the hinges to me and Chad.

Carl-

Sure, once I get it mounted up and tested I will toss it in the same package the hinges are in.

Chad-

I hope you don't need those hinges soon! I should be able to get the package out to you two early next week.

Nope! I don't have a need for them anytime soon, so whenever you get around to it is fine with me!

The round camlocks work really nicely. Carl and Chad - I will send you guys out the hinges and camlock this week.

I do have one Hartwell H-5000-2 latch I didn't use if anyone wants it. $15 + first class postage and it's yours.
