Spike-

Congrats on getting the fuse shipped! You getting it delivered to your house or doing a dock pickup? I think a dock pickup saved me about $100 or so. If you don't have a pickup, and want to do the dock pickup (if its worth it), I can grab my old mans pickup (in Marriottsville) and save ya some money.

I have a pickup, though the kit is scheduled to come to my house. I do think I have located a friend who owns a business with loading dock and forklift. If the freight company will let me I think I might have it shipped there to make it easier on everyone.

Spike-

A dock pickup is when you go to ABF and pick it up at their distribution center (Should be Elkridge, MD for you). You can call up ABF anytime to change your delivery option to this and get the difference in price.

Yeah, I was just thinking about what I was considering. If its in Elkridge thats a no brainer as I work next to BWI. Wonder if they will have some muscle to help me get it into the truck. Then I can just try to get some people to meet me at my house to get it out of the truck into the shed.

I picked mine up at Elkridge and they used a forklift to put it in the pickup. I have used dock deliveries for all the big subkits and ABF has always helped out. You won't have any problems going there by yourself.

Make Sure Your Pickup can handle the weight and length!

Post by Bob Barrett »

Spike make sure your pickup can handle the weifht and length of the fuselage kit! Not all pickups are created equal. I hired a guy with a "Beaver tail" truck bed to deliver my quick build fuselage and quickbuild wing kits. Those boxes were to big and heavy for my 4'X8' trailer which can haul a ton of rock. The Beaver tail truck bed can raize up and slide back to almost put the crates on your garage floor. I used some four foot lengths of galvanized steel pipe and rolled my crates around with the help of my wife and a pry bar. It cost me about a $100 and was well worth the money. :) Congratulations and good luck!

I have a Dodge 2500 w the Cummins. If the dimensions on van's website are right I should have no issues with getting it into the bed with the tail gate down.

Spike's Fuse kit.

Post by Wicked Stick »

Glad to hear Christmas is coming early this year at your shop. :)
Congrats !

Today I got to hang my wings, thanks to 3 helpers who had Friday afternoon free. They Slid right in with only a minor glitch.
1 rivet on each side interfered with the side skin. It's a common issue and the book says to remove some of the skin to get the clearance you need. After we marked the location, and dremmel'd out a bit of the side skin they slid right in and using the drift pins I bought for the engine hang, the bolts slid right in as the drift pins ahead of them helped to line it all up.

I'll post a Pic this weekend in the 8 forum.

Hey Spike,

Congratulations!! I just started on my fuse kit recently and I'm having a great time with it. Just take your time, spend some quality time studying the drawings, and you'll do fine. It's a lot of fun and variety, after all the work doing the wings.

I am really hoping so. The wings have been horribly monotonous and I have no desire to ever see another control surface / stiffener again. Funny thing is that the tanks were one of the most enjoyable processes of the wing build.

It's great to hear that, because I had the same thought! I kept thinking "what's up with all the talk of "black death" and all this dread of working with pro-seal and doing the tanks?" because it wasn't bad at all. I'd much rather build another set of tanks than go through all the trouble I had with the ailerons. I'm just so happy things turned out so well, and to have my wings finished.

Agreed - while working with proseal is not in my top ten list, I don't think it's nearly as bad as people talk about. I'm even doing twice as much of it, by building the main tanks and converting the outboard leading edge to auxiliary tanks.
