Finish Kit!

Post by aparchment »

Whooohoooo! My finish kit arrived via BAX this afternoon. It was in perfect shape, and the guy who delivered did an expert job of moving the monster box into my garage.

I unpacked it this evening and am inventorying it as I write. You gotta love that pink cowl. That's not going to last long around here. I will repaint it in gray primer when I start working with it so I don't have to look at that awful pink every day. Not a lot of parts in this one. Despite this, finish kit is really a misnomer. I will consider it the finish kit when I am ordering the last few parts to hook the engine up.

FYI, BAX cost about half as much to ship as some of the other alternatives out there. I was very relieved. It was starting to tick me off that the cost of shipping was going to be as much as a major component (was quoted just over $800 to the east coast).

Time to get my ass in gear and stay motivated! I want this sucker as close to done as I can get this year. I've got my fingers crossed that the economy doesn't tank any worse than it already has.

Thanks guys.

Chad, I am fortunate to have guys like you, Brian and Mike who are blazing the trail ahead of me who I can turn to when I have questions. Thanks a bunch to all of you for keeping your websites up to date. I get a lot of great ideas from them, as well as good guidance when I am confused about something.

Antony-

Have fun with the <nowhere near>finish kit! The best part of the finish kit is how fast inventorying took. There aren't that many parts. That's about the extent of the fun with this kit! Personally, I found it to be the most difficult kit so far. Very little documentation on it and lots of iterative fittings for both the cowl and the canopy. Just take your time and don't get frustrated. Don't set any hard dates for finishing it. It will take 2 times longer than you think, but when it's done, it will be worth it!

I miss the fuselage kit!

Oops! I meant BAX Carl. They are another shipper Van's uses.

OK, thanks. That would be BAXGlobal. Favor - do you have the finish kit box size and weight handy? I'll leave out the cowl (going with SJ), so I don't know if they use a smaller box or not.

Hey Carl...the box is the same size, and the weight is negligible. Van's didn't distinguish between a box with a cowl, and a box without...the chart on their site is accurate regardless, for getting quotes.

I guess I should add that that was the case when I got mine last winter...
