Aircraft Registration Question

Post by bullojm1 »

I am in the process of registering my RV with the FAA. I have the hardcopy of the Aircraft Registration Information form (form 8050-1) and have the following questions:

1) Under "Aircraft Manufacturer and Model" would I put my "Bullock, Joseph M. Bullock RV-7" since "Bullock, Joseph M" is the manufacturer (me) and "Bullock RV-7" is the model?

2) Under the signature section, would TITLE just be "Owner"?

Thanks for any advice/input! Once I figure out all of these issues with registering the plane, I am planning on writing up a complete tutorial on how to go about this.

Mike,

On question #1, I would just put "Bullock RV-7". This is comparable to "Vans RV-7".

All this is spelled out in the EAA Registration Kit.... Very useful and guaranteed to help you get it right. Good Luck!

Mike,

Here is how mine looks... Notice I did NOT use the name "VANS" in the Model. This is what the State Tax Dept searchbot looks for...

What the crap does the State Tax dept. have to do with whether or not you have Van's in the model designation? :?

Makes no difference...I could've put Learjet RV-7, and it would be the same thing as Van's, Jensen, Bullock, etc...to the state. Maybe it depends on your state...

Aircraft Registration Question

Post by smithhb »

I just got a tax bill for State sales tax on my aircraft by the State of Georgia.  They, like MANY States, use a search firm to scour all aircraft registrations for tax billing.  When I spoke to them, they told me the search software scans for common aircraft manufacturers and models and if one is recognized, they send a tax bill.  She said that if the manufacturer or model is unknown or non-identifiable, they don't mess with it.

YMMV

Ahh...I gotcha now...

Did you not pay tax as you bought kits? Just curious how Georgia deals with this.

In Illinois, if you don't pay tax along the way, you stand a chance of being penalized at the end with one large tax bill, plus penalties for being late. I've paid tax on all the kits, engine, and avionics along the way, so having Van's in the model won't make a difference.

I was just curious Bret...thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for the advice guys. Sounds like the main thing is to avoid anything that would cause the tax-man to think you have anything valuable.

Chad,

Georgia isn't interested in it until it is a registered aircraft. To them, until then it is nothing more than sheetmetal, assorted bolts and wires.

My understanding is that in MD the registration kicks off the tax man.

I think its pretty standard in all states that the Registration kicks off the state tax man.

Im not sure there is any requirement to call your model "Vans" or even use "RV"
Tell me why you as the manufacturer cant call your craft "Joe's model One"? I dont think we have to play into their hand.

I don't think it matters what you call it, I didn't use vans in mine.

http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry ... rtxt=108LF

I got my tax bill after the registration, Here in ND it is 5%, and it a one time fee. The state only charges a minimal yearly fee after that, and it is based on GW and age.

Yep you can call it "the flying terd" if you want... The model is up to the manufacturer and the builder is the manufacturer.

I read somewhere that someone called his some name to avoid taxes but he was unaware that there was some corporate jet out there called the same thing and when the tax guys audited his tax liability, they appraised his plane in the millions...OOPS!!!

Yep, unless you're set on it, don't call it a Van's anything. That is what the tax folks in California use to determine your use tax value. My plane is going to be registered as a "Wyle-E-Coyote" That's only because Brantel has "The Flying Terd" locked in.

As soon as my wings are done I'm sending in my paperwork and the tax clock starts ticking...

I will also argue if you're the manufacturer and can call your plane anything....you should be able to serialize your aircraft with any number. I am seriously thinking about starting with serial number one (1)

and then be ready to explain to your insurance agent how you should be insured along with the RV class.

Thats the main reason I did not stray far from the norm...I did not use Van's but I did use RV7 and Van's serial number...
