3 F's...

Post by hydroguy2 »

yep, I talking about fit, fiberglass and fairings. Today I decided to move aft and install the tail pieces and get some fairing work out of the way. I already have all my fiberglass stuff out on the bench soooo.

Here's the initial fit of the Vans VS fairing. After hearing all the horror stories of poor fit, I was surprised. Fit was...workable.

I trimmed about 1/2 inch off the top VS overlap, this allowed it to set down a bit and fit was improved 50%

Next trimmed the HS overlap, this didn't really change the fit, but it looked better.

some day I'll actually have an airplane

Looks good Brian... I got really lucky as well as mine fell on with very little work needed!

still working the fit of the VS, but things are looking good. I decided to nix the metal/rubber fairing under the HS and make a wrap around glass piece. It's a slow process....trim, sand, glass, wait, glass, wait, trim, finally I like the fit ok, then mixed up a batch of flox/micro to smooth out the edges.

Since this is taking so long and I'm all glass ready, I may as well start work on the gearleg fairings and wheel pants.

Any reason not to? Any gotcha's I need to know? I see Brian Ch did his before engine, anyone else?

Keep in mind that I did not do the intersection fairings before mounting the engine as they need to be done with the weight on the gear....

In the shop this morning and pulled the VS fairing...ok pulled might be the wrong wording... I struggled to get the newly floxed fairing to release from the fuselage. Some of the flox mixture had oozed between the HS and fuse. Here's a shot after a quick profile sanding.

and the underside. Still need to do some thinning along s few edges and then recoat with micro

Also started on my wheelpants and gearleg fairings.

After I got the wheel pants out, I noticed....HEY there's nothing left in the box! ......of course I'm not getting rid of it yet as it will make a good safe place to store finished stuff

Getting there. I sanded for a while, reglassed a thin spot, sanded some more. then need to shoot a reference coat to see where I was going. still got a ways to go....guess I have time, haven't ordered my engine yet.
