Registration Lead Time DataPoint

Post by Brantel »

Mailed my registration in on 1/7.

They cashed my check as it cleared the bank the evening of 1/13.

My registration data appeared on the FAA database on 1/14.

5 working days which included the mail time to them from East TN....

My experience was just about the same. Just be aware registering the project with the FAA kicks off the state to collect taxes on your project, in some states.

Brantel,

I hangar my RV in Polk County, TN (1A3) and our county has no personal property tax on aircraft. Have you checked with your county?

Not property tax...

Post by rob »

If TN is like IL, it isn't property tax...it is use tax (aka. sales tax for out of state purchases where tax hadn't previously been paid)

Like Rob says, use tax is the issue in TN. They will come after you if you don't pay it.

How will the state know how much sales or use tax to demand if you registered early and have a mostly unfinished item?

They will require that you fill out a form stating how much you paid for your airplane.

If you do not fill it out, they will appraise your project themselves by looking on Barnstormer for the highest priced airplane they can that is similar to yours.....Not good!

They are not ignorant on what the kit cost as all they have to do is look on Van's site. If you claim less than that, they may come after you.

As far as registering early, you can't get a bill of sale from Vans untill you have purchased the entire kit so the least you can get away with is paying tax on the kit price since you need the BOS to register....

You want to only pay tax on what you purchased out of state and did not pay tax for. Your labor does not count.
