edge preperation

Post by Joe Parish »

I am wondering about edge preparation on the skins. My question, is anyone putting the slight bend on the outside edges of the skin as you would on a lap joint? I have looked at quite a few build sites, which alot of them are frequently on this forum and it appears to me that it is only done in the case of lap joints? Currently working on the horizontal stabilizer. Thanks in advance!

I did not do it any where on the empennage. I did do it on the wings where the skins overlap, and I also did it on the turtle deck joint on the fuselage.

Oh, I did just remember...I did use the edge roller on the rudder and elevators where the leading edges come together. Good idea to do it there! 8)

I also did it on portions of the fuselage build where the mid section skins overlap the tail cone sections on the bottom and sides.

Its not a requirement though.

Not sure which tool you are using to do this, but I highly recommend the vise grip edge roller from Avery Tools as the way to go.

I do have that one I believe cleveland sells it though? I first bought the one from Avery at Osh this year it was a round piece of wood with two rollers attatched before I saw the one from cleveland the vice grip style. Thanks Dave that is good advice because I think the one with just the two rollers without the angle built into the rollers is very hard to use.

I have both the vise grip version, and the "...round piece of wood with two rollers attached ..." version. I think the vise grip version is much better. However, I think it's actually Cleaveland that sells it, Avery sells the other one.

OOOps, ok I could be wrong on who sells it, but at least we all like the vise-grip ones better than the hockey puck one.
