There's an O-320-1D2 sitting in a hangar with a cracked case I may be able to get for free.
What I'm looking for for my RV-7A is an O-320 with vertical induction (scoop on bottom), carb (not fuel injected) and a fixed pitch prop.
I don't know what the 1D2 means.
But back to the cracked case-is this engine even worth considering? Let's say I can get this engine for free or REALLY cheap, am I able to get a new case and have it rebuilt into a solid engine?
Basically, how big a deal is a cracked case?

I saw this yesterday and couldn't find any reference to 1D2. But I'm a rookie at Lycoming stuff, so ???

150 hp (112 kW) at 2700 rpm, Minimum fuel grade 80/87 avgas, compression ratio 7.00:1. Similar to E2A but with Slick disposable magnetos and 0-235 front.[4] Used in the Cessna 172 I to M models.
Seems like a good engine for an RV, huh? Since it obviously needs rebuilt, I believe the pistons can be swapped out to increase the hp to 160.
I'm still trying to find out what it would 'costs' to get this clunker!

Ah, now thats a different story. the E2D is quite prevalent, and as noted above are in quite a few 172's. My old skyhawk had one and the thing was bulletproof. I wouldn't hesitate to put one of these in an RV.s10sakota wrote:Well got some new info...my buddy mistyped it. It's an O-320-E2D

The E2D is very common as Spike said. It's a great engine, but you will FOR SURE want to make it 160hp. I can't say that I've seen or heard of any 7's with 150hp, and I think you would be very disappointed with performance at 150hp. I was going to go with a 320 for my 7, but got a good deal on an overhauled 360. I've flown both engines in RV-7's and I will say that there is a noticeable difference in performance between the 160 and 180 horse 7's...but the 160 in the 7 will be so much better than anything in the certified world that uses the same engine. Sounds like a good deal Mark! 

Not true. It's a function of compression ratio, and there are a lot of people running mogas just fine on their 8.5:1 or less 360 engines. 'Course if you go with 7.2:1 with a 360, you'll be down in the 170hp range, but mogas is completely acceptable there.
Fuel flows will average 1-2gph less with the 320...but you also can get the same speed on the same fuel flow with the 360, and have plenty of reserve speed, if you can throttle back. I was never able to do that with mine because I crave the speed, and accepted the fuel flow when I wanted it.
I was able to cruise at 160kts true, and burn 7.8gph in my 7, and if I wanted it, I could shove the throttle forward and burn 10.5gph and push it on up to 178kts true.

Get some 9 to 1 pistons add Pmags and you'll be close to 170hp. AND it will run fine on premium Autofuel if you want. I think you might need a different rear case to add the mechanical fuel pump on an E2D
My friends RV-4 had O-320 E2D putting out roughly 170hp BUT had a hartzell C/S 7666 prop. It was fantastic and the reason I built my RV-7 with a Constant speed prop.
