Oil Separator Recommendation?

Post by bullojm1 »

I got my first aerobatics lesson in my RV-7 yesterday and Wow...I am completely hooked. Aileron rolls, barrel rolls, loops and hammerheads. I enjoy them all!

One thing I didn't enjoy was all of the oil my breather tube let out on the back of my firewall and all over my belly. Today there were pools of oil all over the hangar floor.

I know people have recommended the Anti-Splat Aero Oil Separator on the other forum. Was wondering what people thought of it here. Any downsides, besides cost? Here's the link to the product:

Thanks for any input!

Mikey,

I just bought the ASA UNIT and I like it!

Yah, go for it.

If it doesn't work... we will both die a miserable death together (in different planes, of course)!

Besides, we both are already going straight to HELL anyways!

I like the Anti Splat separator and vacuum valve. It hasn't changed my oil consumption, looks to still be 1qt in 10-12hrs...BUT i am running it at a higher level than before. I used to only fill to 5.5qts then add 1/2qt when i hit 5. If previously I filled to 6 it would drop to 5.5 in 1 hr or so and I would see it on the belly and drips on the hangar floor.

Now I filled to 6 on the stick. floor and belly are clean and I'm just now down to just barely under 5.5 after 9.3 hrs.

PS I run my engine hard a lot...WOT 2400 or higher cruise and race testing at 2600rpm. but no acro yet.

Brian and CJ-

Thanks for the input! I sent back and forth some emails to Allan @ Anti-Splat Aero today. Sounds like that's the ticket

Mike,

Vans carries an oil separator, too, just for reference. Maybe somebody here has some experience with it. It looks similar, to me anyway, to the Anti-Splat product. I'll bet a phone call to the guys at Vans will answer a lot of questions about any differences.

As for Anti-Splat, Allen is a good guy. I had my nosewheel mod done by him and I'm totally pleased with it. I don't have an oil separator installed yet, but I can vouch for the company, at least. I like the idea of the vacuum valve, too.
