QB to do list

Post by swill »

I'll help get this list started...

My QB should arrive around the last week of December (what a Christmas present!). Does anyone have a rough list of items to do or suggestions on where to get started with a QB kit?

I know - read the instructions and check off what needs to be done! Just wondering if anyone compiled a general list so I can prepare in advance.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Have you already built the empennage?

Yep, got it done in just over 100 hrs with the help of an experienced RV-8 builder. Just waiting on the big parts to come.

I built the slow-build wings, but got the QB fuselage. Advice: Inspect the workmanship very closely in the hard-to-reach places (inside tail cone, etc.). You might have to re-do some of it to your own standards. I had to redo the rear-most bulkhead (the one that the rear spar of the VS attaches to) and found as example that the edge deburring did not meet the standards that Van's has listed in the manual for edge radius. Didn't look like the edges had any radius at all, although there was no burrs. My advice to anyone who has the time: go the slow build route. It'll come out to your standards, and you'll save enough money for a nice avionics stack.

Scott,
I'm a true believer in the quote " a picture is worth a bazillion words" or something like that. Take your camera to the airport where a fly in is taking place and find a "7" and shoot all the angles. I also am from the Atlanta area. My plane (RV-7) is at Winder airport. If you would like to get some pictures or some ideas I would be glad to meet you out there and answer any questions that might help you out.

scott

the vans manual for the empanege parts has a "to do list' the rest of the
qb is not defined like that in the manual. we recieved our qb kit last of aug 05 and we now have the wings done. oh yea the new -1 wing tips have a lenght problem... they are 1/2 too long. must glass and resin the trail edge then cut / shape to length. sent pic to vans ..

what we did was spend a few hrs going over the drawings and finding what is not qb and then going to the manual and see if this tells you what to do. from this we would make a "to do list" that becomes the build log.
all of this is an excel (computer program).

we have pictures but have not pasted them into the excel sheet ...yet.

The QB really doesn't flow like the emp kit. The manual has a list of things to do in kind of an order. I just spent a couple of days looking over the plans figuring out what should be done and went for it.

I'm a little further along than the picture indicates.

7&8 Quick build wing to do list in order:
1. Build aileron hinges.
2. Attach aileron hinges.
3. Prepare and attach aileron angle brace.
4. Build your push rods as per plans.
5. Plumb pitot tube.
6. Install bell crank .
7. Run any wire needed.
8. Attach the last skin.
9. Mount ailerons
10. Install your push rods.
11. Attach flap brace to spar. Don't forget to machine counter sink the lower edge.
12. Prepare flap hinge. Decide now how you want the flap hinge rod to be run.
13. Attach flap hinge.
14. Attach flaps and check for fit.
15. Take flaps off and store them for now.
Except for the tips you're done. Personally I'm saving all the glass work for last.
Hope this helps someone.
