Red Stuff
People either make a temporary (or permanent) rib from foam or balsa wood. The plug helps maintain the shape of the fiberglass tip. A layer of fiberglass is usually set over the balsa wood. After this, a filler material is applied over the glassed area and sanded, re-applied, sanded, re-applied, etc. etc. etc.
