Deburring AFTER Dimpling - OK, I scewed up...

Post by N200PF »

Normally I would post this in the "Screw Up Chronicles" as fun reading for all but I do want to hear from all of you (if any) who have been blessed with this situation and what method you used to fix it.

I final drilled the skins to the rear spar on the HS and was so excited to dimple with my Pneumatic Squeezah (as Spike calls it!) that I just plane SKIPPED a step and forgot to deburr the holes in the flange on one of the two pieces I just drilled. :bang:

I used a little rat tail file to sneak in to each hole and knock the edges down from the concave side and a jewelers flat file to finish the edges on the convex side. Is this OK or do I need to order a new part?!? I got to thinking about it and it is the SPAR so I want to make sure I get this right!

I think you'd be ok to use your regular debur tool very lightly on the dimple side and back side. In some instance’s you will need to use your debur tool in the dimple to improve a rivet fit anyway.

As long as they all look OK and there are no major cracks, etc I wouldn't worry about it. Not saying it's right, but I've read lots of stories about people not deburring any parts AT ALL. Not for me, but it might be OK...

Peter -

I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not - but I usually run a scotchbrite pad over the raised part of the dimple when I'm done - especially on ribs.
There is a noticable difference in the feel between the "before" and "after" (the "after" always feels softer).

Why don't you call Van's and see what they say??

Thats what I do also, though its for a bit different reason. The end result is that the dimples clean up nicely.
