I just don't get it, help!

Post by cjensen »

i'm not sure why i'm not understanding this instruction (i think i asked a similar question when working on the rudder), but this whole 'beveling' thing just has me confused.

on the elevators, it says to bevel the area where E-713 (counterweight skin) crosses the spar, and rearward for a smooth transition between skins. WHAT??? :?

i've always know a bevel to be on an edge, where you make an angled edge with whatever material you're working with (glass, drywall, metal, etc...). so what are they talking about here? am i supposed to thin the metal where 713 crosses the spar, or just literally bevel the edges on TOP of the skin where the elevator skin lays on top?

does my question make sense?
help...

Yah, they do make sense.

FWIW... I didn't bevel them.

The same technique is used on the wing skins where the top skins overlap just behind the tank.

Basically, you want to sand (shave off some thickness) of the skin so that it will lay flatter than if it weren't otherwise trimmed.

Know whatta mean? Does that answer your question?

are you saying across the skin, or just the edges?

...just where the two skins fasten together, if I am not mistaken.

Trimming (removing thickness) the outside of the counterbalance skin and the inside of the Elevator skin where the two meet.

May help to think of it as a ramp rather than a bevel. How ever you think of the modifcation it's pretty discrete. I think of it more like a very thin chisel with a very dull edge.

I added the above image to remove any doubt.
